How do I meet the 12-month work requirement?
You need 12 months of fully insured employment in Austria within the last 24 months
To meet the 12-month work requirement:
If you are employed (“angestellt”):
- Work at least 12 months in total within the past 24 months in Austria
- Your earnings must be above the minor employment threshold (€551.10/month in 2025)
- Each month must include full insurance (health, accident, and pension)
- The months don't need to be consecutive - you can combine periods from different jobs
- Only officially registered employment counts toward this requirement
If you are self-employed (“selbstständig”):
- You must earn above the yearly insurance threshold (€6,613.22 in 2025)
- Income can be unevenly distributed throughout the year
- You must be registered with SVS (Social Insurance for Self-Employed)
- Required proof can include:
- Business registration documents
- SVS insurance confirmation
- Client invoices/bills
- Bank statements showing business income
- Income tax statements (if available)
